Tips for Buying a Garage Door

February 1, 2020| Garage Envy| 0 Comment

Did you know that a new garage door is one of the top items that new home buyers look for, as well as add the most resale value to your home? According to a report publish by National Association of Realtors, a new garage door ranks third on the lists of projects Realtors think both appeal most to new home buyers as well as add the most resale value to your home. Plus, it’s something that adds function and fashion to your garage, so let’s learn more and get going already!

Garage door

Even if you aren’t ready to sell now, who doesn’t want to
make improvements that will put money in your home value piggy
bank for later?

Be Wise About Size

The first step towards your new garage door is making you know all the important measurements. You don’t want to take the time to shop around, fall in love with a beautiful garage door and come to find out that it’s too small for your space.

Garage door

Grab your tape measure and get familiar with your garage dimensions!

1) You will need to know the dimensions of the garage door opening itself (the space the door will actually fill), height and width in feet/inches.

2) You next will want to measure what is known as side room. This is the area from the garage opening to the wall on the left and right side of the garage opening.

3) Headroom is the third measurement to consider. This is the area from the top of the garage opening to the ceiling of the garage. If the garage door you purchase exceeds the height of the garage opening and spreads into the headroom, adjust your measurements accordingly.

4) Backroom is the depth of your garage. This measurement is important because when you garage door is open, this is the amount of space the door can be taking up.

Home Depot has a great visual showing what each of these measurements are that you should be aware of before hunting for that perfect door.

Dollars and Design

Once you have your measurements all worked out, you can begin to think about the door itself. A garage door is the accent piece to your entire garage. Depending on your house set up, it can be a major focal point to the overall look and aesthetic of your home. Don’t worry, there are lots of options to meet your design needs!

3 of the more common and popular options are aluminum, steel, and wood.

  • Aluminum doors are a great option for humid climates due to their rust resistance. The panels for the door can be arranged horizontally or vertically, depending on preference. Glass panels can also be installed to create a unique, modern look. Average pricing for aluminum garage doors range from $1,000-2,000.
  • Steel doors are fairly durable, low maintenance and provide lots of color and style options to choose from. Overall, they are somewhat inexpensive to purchase for a basic option if you aren’t allocating a huge budget for your garage door. Average pricing for steel garage doors range from $700-$3,000
  • Wood is perhaps the material that will give the most character and charm to your garage, but require more maintenance than metal door counterparts. For good quality, average pricing for wood garage doors range from $1,200-$3,000, but this higher bound can easily exceed $4,000 for top quality, custom wood garage doors.

Garage door

Despite wood garages becoming less popular with the rise of
steel and aluminum doors, they are on the rise for homeowners
looking for a classy, classic touch.
