Your garage may not seem like the most festive spot in your home at first glance, but if you’re looking for the best space to host the annual Thanksgiving dinner, it’s worth considering the garage as an option. Think about it: it’s a large space, and a lot of the biggest things that are stored in it, like cars, can be easily moved out of the way to make room for tables and chairs. If your dining room is too small to host a big dinner, or if your house is full up with visiting relatives – and their luggage – in every corner, the garage might be your best bet. Take a look at some tips for making your garage a festive spot for the holidays.
Make Your Work Benches Work For You
All those surfaces that you use for building, crafting, or fixing things can easily be turned into buffet stations. It’s OK if those surfaces are normally covered with paint splotches or other stains – a simple tablecloth instantly camouflages all of that, leaving a perfect surface for your turkey, side dishes, and desserts. Push the benches to the sides of the garage, if they aren’t there already, leaving the middle of the room empty, and store any tools or other items that are currently sitting on top of your work benches underneath of them or in the cabinets for now.
With the food distributed on benches near the walls, you’ll have the middle of the garage free for a long table and some folding chairs. It’s OK if the table is a bit narrow, because you’ll only need room for everyone’s plates and silverware. You can either let everyone serve themselves from the buffet table, or, if you’re short on space, you may want to designate one or a few people to act as servers, to cut down on the number of people walking around at once.
Primp Your Pegboard
If your walls are covered with pegboard to help keep your tools in order, take them down for the day. That pegboard is the perfect place for hanging Thanksgiving decorations, from crafts that your kids made at school to seasonal wreaths. Simply removing the hanging tools and hanging the Thanksgiving flair can give your garage a more festive look.
Not sure where to store your hanging tools for the day? If you have a box or plastic tote where the Thanksgiving decorations were stored, that might be a good container for your hanging tools until you’re ready to take down the decorations. Just swap them out when it’s time to put your garage back to normal.
Make Room for Fun
If you have enough space – for example, if you have a two car garage and you have enough room to put your table on one side – then this is the perfect time to set up that ping-pong or foosball table that you’ve been storing in the garage. Or you may want to bring a couch, some chairs, and a coffee table out, creating space for a card or board game.
This way, you’re providing a space for visiting family members to socialize and enjoy each other’s company after they eat. If you bring out comfortable seats to relax in after the dinner, the garage is also a perfect place for after-dinner drinks, and it’s a lot easier to clean up spills off of your garage floor than off of your living room rug.
