Is Your Garage Connected? Here’s How to Boost the WiFi Signal in Your Garage

February 1, 2020| Garage Envy| 0 Comment

The strength of your Wi-Fi signal in the garage is something that you probably won’t spend much time thinking about – until you need it for something. Then you’ll wonder why you never thought about it before and how you can make it stronger. Take a look at some of the reasons why you might need a stronger Wi-Fi signal in your garage and check out a couple of ways to make it happen.

Why You Need a Stronger Wi-Fi SignalGarage changed into a home office.

The garage can be a great space for a home office where you can work on a side hustle, start your own small business, or provide a quiet space for your kids to study. Installing a computer in the garage isn’t the only reason why you might need a better Wi-Fi signal in your garage.

With more and more devices being added to the Internet of Things, there’s an increasing chance that your garage may need to be connected to the internet for smart devices to work properly. Are you thinking of adding automatic lights or installing a new garage door? Chances are that some of the most popular options for these items are going to need an internet connection. As more and more homes evolve into smart homes, internet availability in all areas of the home, including the garage, is going to become more important.

Why Garages Have Low Wi-Fi Signals

Not everybody has problems connecting their garage to the home Wi-Fi signal. If your garage is connected to the house and your house isn’t overly large, then you may not have a problem at all. If you do notice a low Wi-Fi signal in your garage, it’s probably for one of three reasons:

  • You have a large house and your Wi-Fi router is located in a spot that’s far away from your garage.
  • There are several walls or especially thick walls between your router and your garage.
  • You have a detached garage located too far away from your house for the signal to easily reach your garage.

Determining what the problem is can help you figure out how to fix it.

Solutions for Low Garage Wi-Fi

There are a couple of solutions that may work if you’re trying to improve the Wi-Fi signal in your garage. You can install a Wi-Fi range extender that will boost your internet signal. This may create a signal that’s strong enough to be picked up inside the garage. If you’re using a computer in the garage, you can also try a USB Wi-Fi antenna, which can help your PC pick up a weak signal.

If those options don’t work, you may be able to improve the path of your Wi-Fi signal between the house in the garage. Move the router to an outlet on a wall closer to the garage, with fewer obstructions in the way. Try to place the router near a window that looks out at the garage; it’s easier for the signal to pass through glass than through walls. You may need to have your internet service provider send out a technician to help determine the best placement for the router and hook it up correctly.

If you’re considering creating a garage office or installing smart devices in your garage, you may want to test out the range on your Wi-Fi router before you make the changes or installations. This can give you more options if you find that you need a stronger signal. For more great ideas when it comes to updating your garage,  contact us for a free design consultation and estimate.
