How to Create a Cool Garage Bar

February 1, 2020| Garage Envy| 0 Comment

Looking for a cool new addition to your garage that might be an expected surprise? Look no further than creating your own garage bar and kick off summer with a great new place to gather and have a good time! Here is some basic information to help you get your garage gears grinding.

Garage bar

Let’s help you roll out the open sign for your very own garage bar!

What It’ll Take

You’ll need some vision, some time and some space. As with most DIY projects, your personal taste will be the deciding factor in materials, dimensions and placement of your cool garage bar. The best first step is to brainstorm a bit, get an idea of the scale of your project and how far out you want to go with bar accessories (taps, kegs, lighting, etc.)

Materials: The Bare Bones of Your Bar

There are several material options to go with. However, a good and simple option to think about is utilizing wood, such as 2x4s and plywood or pallets, to create a cost effective and cool bar. The best part is that you don’t have to be a woodworking pro to be able to build your own bar, all you’ll need is a few basic tools like a table saw, nails or nail gun, screw gun and caulk gun. Always ask around to see if any neighbors have items you might not have to save some cash, and maybe have a helping hand if needed.

Pallets are a great way to construct the bar front with less effort that you can place a cool accent piece on top so your bar has a striking visual when being looked at straight on. You could also go with plywood on top of the pallets and paint an awesome design (if you are artistically inclined) on top to make something cool, chic and custom.

Get inspired with some unique items that could be a creative bar
front. Maybe an old door? The possibilities are endless!

Once constructed, you will absolute want to seal and stain your bar. Since garages are more exposed to elements than the inside of your house, you’ll want to choose something that not only has a nice aesthetic feel but also atmospheric resistance. Acrylic clear coat is a great option for the bar top to protect from any drink spilling mishaps that are bound to occur.

Sizing: Just How Much to Raise the Bar

There is not one set size you have to make your garage bar. However, there are a few standard sizes for bar construction for you to consider and help you stay on track.

Garage bar

Dimensions can change, but try to keep the scale of the individual
bar components in mind when planning your own bar

The two most important measurements are the bar itself and the height of the stools. In general, the dimensions are:

  • A bar is generally 42 inches in height
  • A bar stool should be around 30 inches in height

Some other measurements to take into consideration are:

  • The bar surface, or top, should be around 15-20 inches but not more than 20 (unnecessary material cost)
  • If you plan to add a foot rail, consider having it be ½-3/4 foot off the ground for maximum comfort when sitting on the stools

And there are some of the basics! As always, keep in mind that these are just some standards and not rules. You can modify materials, spacing and design choices based on your own garage and your ideal of what a cool garage bar will be for you.
