There’s nothing quite like a house that’s been painstakingly decorated for the holidays. Coming home to a lovingly decorated house can lift your spirits and help get you in the celebratory mood after a tough day, and it can help out-of-town relatives visiting for the holidays feel at home. Those are a few of the reasons why it’s worth taking the time to decorate each year. But the process of decorating can be frustrating, and that frustration often starts with finding and organizing the decorations that were put away hastily last year. Finding a better way to store and organize your holiday decorations can make the decorating process easier and more enjoyable, as well as making it easier to put everything away when the holiday is over. Take a look at a few ways you can improve your storage system this year.
Install Cabinets
Tired of tripping over boxes full of decorations? When you open the boxes every year, do you always find that one or two decorations have been broken because of all the times the boxes were moved around, tripped over, or dropped throughout the year? Instead of just setting or stacking your boxes on the garage floor, where they’ll inevitably be in the way eventually, invest in a good set of cabinets for the garage.
Solid, deep cabinets that are designed for garage use can hold your decorations and plenty of other storage items as well, keeping them off the floor, out of the way, and protected. They’ll be easier to find the next holiday season when you’re looking for them, and you’re less likely to discover broken ornaments.
Label Everything
Even with a cabinet full of sturdy shelves, it can be tough to find anything in unlabeled boxes. Labeling a step that you simply can’t skip. If you know that you’re going to be tired and in a hurry by the time you’re putting everything away after the holiday is over, consider labeling the boxes as you unpack them. That way, not only will it already be done for you by the time you’re ready to take down the ornament, wreaths, and wall-hangings, you’ll already know where everything is supposed to go.
Avoid the Jumble
Organization doesn’t stop with the outside of the box. Avoiding a jumble of ornaments and lights that need to be detangled and separated from each other is an important part of avoiding holiday decoration frustration. Find ways to ensure that the things inside the boxes stay where they’re supposed and don’t end up in a messy heap.
For example, use cardboard dividers to store ornaments in their own separate spaces, so they don’t fall into each other and break. Line the compartments with something soft, like acid-free tissue paper that won’t affect the paint on the ornament, before placing the baubles inside. Hate trying to untangle strings of lights? Before you put them away, wrap them around an empty cardboard tube, like the ones that hold wrapping paper. When you box up flat ornaments that can be stacked, make sure that you put tissue paper between each one, so they don’t end up stuck together.
