Here’s the Safety Gear You Need for Your Garage Workshop

February 1, 2020| Garage Envy| 0 Comment

It seems that more and more people are converting garages into multi-faceted spaces, such as workshops. Along with fitting your garage workshop will all the proper gear, like workbenches, racks, and tools, you should be equally prepared with safety gear. Here are some key safety items that you need to incorporate into your garage workshop setup.

Begin with Basics: First Aid Kit

Your house should already be rigged with one of these, but there should be a first aid kit in close proximity to your garage workshop. A good tip with a first aid kit is to always include your specific medical information (medicine allergies, special conditions, etc.) in the unfortunate event that something so severe happens that paramedics need to assist. You can buy a premade first aid kit or make your own. General items to include in your first aid kit for your workshop are:

  • Antiseptic cleaners
  • Gauze and bandages
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen

Make sure to check the kit on a regular basis to make sure no medicine has expired.

Goggles

Putting on a pair of goggles is a quick and easy way to make sure you are taking proper safety precautions for your workshop project. In a survey conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, only 35% of people surveyed always wear protective eye gear. Make sure you are in this percentile and always keep safety goggles on hand. One simple step can help keep one of your most valuable senses intact.

Here’s one example of a type of safety goggle that can be used,

but make your selection based on what you use your workshop for the most.

Gloves

Workshops can be used for a variety of functions, so your glove selection should be versatile as well. Different projects require different types of gloves for proper protection and functionality. For example, you would need heavy leather gloves if trying to weld or dealing with hot metal pieces. If you are doing something that requires more movement, a pair of lighter and tighter-fitting gloves would be you go-to. Create your glove collection based on what your workshop is utilized for and be prepared for all projects.

Masks

Proper ventilation for breathing is a must if you are going to be doing any type of project that will kick up dust or other particles into the air. Since garages are enclosed spaces, using a face mask or dust mask along with keeping the garage door open for air circulation is a must for garage safety gear.

Masks should always be fitted properly to your face to work the most effectively.

Boots

Accidently dropping a heavy item while working at your workbench is something that can happen easily. Not only would such an accident hurt, but serious injury can occur. Protect yourself by keeping a pair of work boots or steel toed boots right by your workbench. You’ll remember to put them on each time by storing them in your garage and you can ensure that you are safe from head to toe.

Safety should always be the primary focus for you and your family when using your garage workshop. Keep these basic safety items on hand and learn more ways to use your garage; contact us today!
