Does Decorating a Garage Make Sense?

February 1, 2020| Garage Envy| 0 Comment

Cleaning, reorganizing and reinvigorating our homes is something common in mind as we begin to transition towards the spring months. But is it worth it to reinvigorate your garage by decorating in addition to cleaning and reorganizing? Is this a part of a home that makes sense to take the time, thought and effort to decorate? Let’s take a look at some pros and cons, and an example of what can be done to make it look as good as the rest of your home.

Garage

Is a garage really worth all this effort? Let’s find out!

Pro: It’s an Extension of Your Home, Treat It as Such

Your garage can be neglected and treated as a lesser part of your home due to its functionality, but it doesn’t have to be. In reality, it is a part of your home and can be a design element that coordinates with your overall aesthetic. With so many great products available, like Garage Envy’s WallScape, rolling work benches and quality cabinetry, your garage can be so much more than a place to store a vehicle.

Con: It’s Your Home’s Interior Space That’s Most Susceptible to the Elements

Of all the living spaces in your home, your garage is the one that will have the most consistent interaction with the best that Mother Nature has to offer. From snow melt in the winter to excess water from April showers, your garage décor will be challenged year round. Because of this, many of the decorating tactics you use in the rest of your home are not practical for your garage.

Decorating Strategy: Painting

Painting is a simple, yet incredibly effective, way to redecorate a space while being a décor element that can hold its own against weather wear and tear. There are ways to incorporate new paint into garage decoration for both the interior and the exterior.

Interior: Garage Flooring

Most garages have the standard concrete flooring. Without any painting, this is a pretty dull and lackluster design element for your garage. However, a concrete floor is actually the perfect canvas for durable weather-resistant floor paint.

Home Depot recommends using a floor/porch paint that is 100% acrylic latex for the best results. Make sure to use a primer recommended for concrete to enhance the durability of your topcoat.

Garage

Best part about painting a floor? No ladders needed!

Exterior: Garage Door

Your garage door is basically the face of your garage to the world. It’s an accent and focal point when looking at the exterior of your home as a whole, which makes it the perfect garage element to decorate. There are a few different ways you can go about painting your garage door. Paint sprayers provide quick coverage, but you have to be thoughtful of the angle at which you are spraying for full coverage on any paneled areas of the door. Painting with a brush gives you great control over coverage but is more time consuming. Both methods can work for creating a standout garage door, so you can pick what makes the most sense for your makeover project!

Garage

You can even use can spray paint for your garage door,
but expect to buy lots of cans and plan for a day without
wind to make this option a wise choice.

Also, remember to check out the weather forecast before picking your painting day. BEHR recommends working on days with mild humidity and in direct sunlight within a temperature range of 50-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
