3 Tips for Great Garage Lighting

February 1, 2020| Garage Envy| 0 Comment

Lighting is a design element that we take for granted because of its frequent use. However, upgrading lighting can completely improve the atmosphere of interior spaces. One study has shown that mood can be affected by lighting within 5 minutes of entering a room. Make sure your garage sets the right mood with these 3 helpful tips for homeowners to improve garage lighting.

1. The Right Purpose for Your Lighting

Your garage is multi-faceted, so your garage lighting should be as well. Choose different types of lighting based on the function of that specified area. For example, your general area lighting should be able to provide an even distribution of bright light. Your workbench area will need quality, close-range lighting that will allow you to properly see during projects involving dangerous tools or small parts. Being conscious of which areas of your garage provide specific functionality will help you choose lighting solutions that best serve its purpose.

Installing or upgrading entryway lighting adds fashion and
function to your garage exterior. Add ambiance and visual assistance for
finding keys late at night.

2. The Right Light Fixtures for Your Purpose

Choosing the right types of bulbs for illuminating your garage is the key to improving the quality of your garage lighting. One of the best choices of general garage lighting is fluorescent bulbs. There are a variety of types that have different ballast and energy efficiencies. For your work areas, check out LED lighting that can be placed underneath shelving. This is a perfect way to get high-quality lighting directly above your workspace so you can see every detail of your project.

projects. Make sure you never miss a thing with proper lighting!

3. The Right Bulbs for Your Light Fixtures

Each type of lighting has a range of bulbs to choose from based on several factors. This is most applicable with what will probably be your most used type of garage lighting, fluorescent bulbs. You need to consider the temperature range of your garage when choosing a type of fluorescent bulb to install.

  • T12 lighting requires a minimum temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid the fluttering effect that many people associate with fluorescent lighting
  • T8 lighting can start at freezing temperatures depending on the type of ballast in your light fixture. Electronic ballasts are ideal for areas with cold temperatures.
  • T5 lighting is much smaller compared to the previously mentioned types of bulbs without sacrificing light output. These are perfect for tight spaces. There are also T5H0 bulbs which output more intense light than regular T5 bulbs.
