What was the last room in your house that you renovated? Was it your kitchen? A bathroom? The living room? Odds are good that it wasn’t your garage – that’s the space that often gets overlooked when homeowners decide to improve a part of their home. Your garage may be a more utilitarian space than the rest of the house, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t need some love occasionally as well. Take a look at some signs that your garage should be next on the list of rooms to renovate in your home.
Your Garage Door is Leaky
Unless you have a climate-controlled garage, it may not be immediately obvious if your garage door has cracks or isn’t as insulated as it should be. But if your utility bills seem higher than they should, it could be a sign that your garage door is letting too much outdoor air in. If your garage is attached to the house, then this can lead to your house being warmer or colder than it should be, and your air conditioner or heater has to work harder to compensate, leading to higher utility bills.
If your door has gaps or cracks in it that are letting in outdoor air, you might also notice outdoor pests getting into your garage. And a leaky garage door is also more vulnerable to wind damage and could let rain or snow in, which can cause items in your garage to sustain water damage. A leaky garage door should be repaired or replaced.
You’re Tripping Over Clutter
The garage is often the de facto storage space for the household. And that’s OK – it’s a big space, and it can certainly hold more than just the family cars. But you don’t want the garage to be so full of things that you can’t comfortably walk through it. That’s a recipe for injuries and damages to your cars and other items in your garage.
You may also like to be able to use your garage as a workspace, which you probably can’t do comfortably if the garage is too cluttered. Excess clutter might mean that it’s time to clean and get rid of some things, but it could also be a sign that you have an organizational problem. Installing shelves, slatwall, and cabinets can greatly improve the clutter problem by giving you more storage space and the ability to neatly organize the items that you’re storing.
You’re Tired of Looking At Bare Walls and Unfinished Floors
There’s no reason why a garage has to be drab. You probably wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time in your living room if it had an unfinished floor and no decoration. Your garage can be just as enjoyable a space as your living room with a little creativity and care.
Epoxy flooring can protect your garage floor from spills and stains and also brighten up the space. Something as simple as a coat of paint can liven up the walls of the garage, but you may also want to look into artwork or wall hangings that fit with your garage’s aesthetic. The garage can also be a great place for display cases to showcase anything from trophies to tchotchkes. Even storage items can be decorative – for example, with colored slatwall and some artful arrangements of hooks and shelves, ordinary garage items can become aesthetically appealing.
